The formula

To go from area to length:

Linear feet = square feet ÷ width in feet

The only trap is the width. Most flooring, trim, and lumber widths are given in inches, so convert to feet first by dividing by 12. A 5 inch plank is 5 ÷ 12 = 0.4167 feet wide. A 6 inch board is 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 feet.

Worked example 2: lumber boards for a deck surface

That 698 figure assumes the boards butt together with no gap. Deck boards usually get an eighth inch gap for drainage and expansion, which slightly reduces how many linear feet you need, but the difference is small and waste from cuts more than covers it. Worked example 3: trim and baseboard

Trim is the one case where you usually skip the square footage entirely. Baseboard, crown, quarter round, and casing run along edges, so you measure length directly, not area. For a 12 by 14 room, the perimeter is 2 × (12 + 14) = 52 linear feet. Subtract the door openings (say two 3 foot doors, so 6 feet) and you're at 46 linear feet of baseboard, plus 10 percent for miter cuts and mistakes, which rounds to about 51 feet.

The formula gives a theoretical minimum, the length you'd need if every board went down whole with zero offcuts. That never happens.
