The core move: convert inches to decimal feet first

Square footage is length times width, but both numbers have to be in the same unit before you multiply. Mixed feet-and-inches readings aren't. The fix is to turn the inches into a decimal fraction of a foot, then add that to the whole feet.

There are 12 inches in a foot, so:

Decimal feet = whole feet + (inches ÷ 12)

Notice that only a few land on tidy decimals: 3 inches (0.25), 6 inches (0.5), and 9 inches (0.75).
